Gavin Newsom: A Political Journey
Early Life and Career
Gavin Christopher Newsom was born on October 10, 1967, in San Francisco, California. He is the son of William Newsom, a lawyer, and Tessa Menzies, a homemaker. Newsom's grandfather, William M. Newsom, was a California Supreme Court Justice.
Newsom attended Redwood High School in Larkspur, California, where he played basketball and was a member of the student government. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Santa Clara University and a Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco School of Law.
After graduating from law school, Newsom worked as a lawyer for the San Francisco law firm of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro. He later co-founded the PlumpJack Group, a hospitality and wine company.
Political Career
Mayor of San Francisco
Newsom entered politics in 2003 when he was elected Mayor of San Francisco. He served three terms in this role, from 2004 to 2011. During his tenure as mayor, Newsom focused on issues such as homelessness, affordable housing, and the environment.
Lieutenant Governor of California
In 2010, Newsom was elected Lieutenant Governor of California. He served in this role from 2011 to 2019. As Lieutenant Governor, Newsom was responsible for overseeing the state's elections and was a member of the University of California Board of Regents.
Governor of California
In 2018, Newsom was elected Governor of California. He took office on January 7, 2019, and has served in this role ever since. As Governor, Newsom has focused on issues such as healthcare, education, and gun control.
