2021 Canadian Championship: Vancouver Whitecaps advance despite scare
Two-time defending champions Vancouver Whitecaps got a big scare in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Canadian Championship, but ultimately advanced to the semifinals despite losing 2-1 to Cavalry FC.
The Whitecaps took an early lead through Julian Gressel in the 14th minute, but Cavalry FC equalized in the 52nd minute through Jordan Brown. Cavalry FC then took the lead in the 75th minute through Dominique Malonga.
However, the Whitecaps managed to equalize in the 85th minute through Deiber Caicedo. The Whitecaps then went on to win the penalty shootout 4-2, with Thomas Hasal making two saves.
The Whitecaps will now face CF Montreal in the semifinals of the Canadian Championship. The first leg will be played on August 10th in Montreal, and the second leg will be played on August 17th in Vancouver.
